2025 Dutch F1 Grand Prix Result Race Summary
Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Here’s where we capture the laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.
Setting the scene – It’s a pure McLaren weekend through Friday and Saturday with Lando Norris dominating by just a little of his team mate in every session up to Q2. But come Q3 qualifying Oscar Piastri gets the slightly faster lap in during the first runs in Q3 and it is enough for pole position. The word is that strategy could be halfway between one or two stops, so Lando could do a Hungary again. Further back Max Verstappen is third and close enough to get in front by turn one and let the narrow track decide the winner, so he can’t be excluded from winning. Both Red Bulls are starting on soft tyres in a neat strategy gamble. Izack Hadjar did a brilliant job to end Qualifying in fourth, Liam Lawson not too bad either in eighth. Ferraris were underwhelming as was Kimi Antonelli in 11th. George Russell was solid enough as ever in fifth. And there’s a chance of rain, early.
GRID (Starting Order) – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS LEC HAM LAW SAI ALO
Lap 1 – Oscar Piastri makes a good enough start on the outside of the pit straight and chops across Lando Norris a little to get to the inside run and get away from Max Verstappen who blasts around the outside of turn one and gets in front of Lando Norris. Going into turn three Max nearly drops it and spins but recovers quickly and stays ahead of Norris. Perfect for Piastri to have Verstappen in between him and his team mate on such a narrow track. Hadjar holds onto fourth and Charles Leclerc gets past George Russell for fifth. Other movers were Alex Albon in 10th and Yuki Tsunoda for a change in 11th. Lando Norris is backing off a touch, maybe getting ready for alternative strategy already. Doubt it’s lack of speed given Norris’ efforts all weekend.
ORDER – PIA VER NOR HAD LEC RUS HAM LAW SAI ALB
Lap 3 – The cars thin out a little and little gaps appear. Lando Norris has closed in a little to Verstappen. But it already has that feeling of a race that will need water to be exciting. Although Australians would prefer it dry as it stands.
Lap 6 – Piastri is now three seconds in front of Verstappen, building a little lead in case of rain. Radio says it will be light rain but last for seven to ten laps. It’s 1.2 seconds from Verstappen to Norris, and around a second down through the field. Not much change at all down the field after lap one.
Lap 8 – Oscar Piastri sets fastest lap as he powers ahead and extends the gap in front. It’s getting Norris into the mood for passing Verstappen, he’s within half a second.
Lap 9 – Lando Norris doesn’t waste much time on Max Verstappen. Nails him under braking around the outside of turn one and powers off into the distance to chase his team mate. Max didn’t put up too might of a fight. The gap ahead to Piastri is just over four seconds.
Lap 12 – Lando Norris sets fastest laps and the gap to the front is 3.8 seconds, as ever this weekend, Norris is the fastest McLaren driver. Despite the rain forecasted, Aston Martin make an executive decision and bring in Lance Stroll for tyres and he gets the Hard compound. Maybe Aston Martin don’t want him for 2026.
Lap 16 – The gap between the race leading McLarens is down to 3.1 seconds, so Norris doing a very good job, but Piastri managing it for now. Just like Izack Hadjar is managing to hold onto fourth from Charles Leclerc and is in fact catching Max Verstappen. Max has dropped back by nine seconds from Norris since being overtaken and is only two seconds ahead of Hadjar now.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD LEC RUS HAM LAW SAI ALB
Lap 20 – Rain is here. Seems light so far, but who knows. It starts off a chain of pit stops – Alonso, Tsunoda, Hulkenberg and Colapinto. It’s more than 50 laps to go if they want to do the rest of the race on the new hard tyres.
Lap 23 – Lewis Hamilton, driving quite the obscure race in 7th discusses pit stop strategy and the undercut of the car in front. Instead of pitting Hamilton they pit Leclerc. A few seconds later there’s the footage of Hamilton’s broken Ferrari into the wall on the outside of turn three.
SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
McLaren aren’t too far away from the pit lane when the Safety Car is called so they come in and double stack. Norris’ pit stop is a little long, as he baulks after the jack man at the front takes a little too long getting out of the way. Everyone is OK. But nothing lost on track as they are miles ahead of the other cars. Those other cars all pit except for Leclerc who did the lap before and has now been inconvenienced dropping from fifth to sixth.

SAFETY CAR EXITS
Lap 27 – Oscar Piastri zooms away nice and early and gets a comfortable gap on Norris. Further back Russell pressures Hadjar unsuccessfully and the Racing Bull keeps fourth. The other Racing Bull of Lawson dices with Sainz, and that was unsuccessful for both as they touch and both cars start slowing, presuming there’s damage. Two good races ruined. Looks like more Lawson’s fault than Sainz as the Williams was attempting a pass on the outside and Lawson just cut him off. Their battle continues after the pit stops to fix tyres and cars.
Max Verstappen – on medium tyres compared to McLaren’s hard tyres – is looking a little racey behind Norris.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS LEC ALB ANT STR OCO
Lap 30 – Oscar Piastri has extended his lead out to two seconds, keeping away from the dreaded DRS. Verstappen’s progress has slowed and is 1.7 seconds behind Norris in third.
Lap 31 – VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
Bit of Carlos Sainz’s Williams need to be picked up, so the cars are slowed for the time being. Meanwhile, McLaren are discussing going to the end of the current set of tyres. Worked in Hungary so why not here. Wonder if Piastri is thinking the same thing or if that strategy is only open to the favourite son.
Lap 32 – RACES RESUMES
Mega move from Charles Leclerc on George Russell for fifth. They race each other the next lap with the Ferrari just staying ahead. Quality racing. Goerge Russell complains as per usual, but he might be right about Leclerc, as the complaint was about Leclerc being off the track, and the Ferrari certainly had a lot of car in the gravel trap when he dived past.
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz is blamed for the Lawson clash and gets a ten second penalty. Carlos Sainz only has one kind of luck in 2025 – bad.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD LEC RUS ANY ALB STR OCO
Lap 35 – After some action in the upper midfield, time to check on the gap in front. It’s 1.5 second to Piastri but closing. Advice from the team, is to go and attack his team mate and pass on track.
Lap 41 – Oscar Piastri holding on in the lead, with a 1.3 second gap to Lando Norris. Max Verstappen is over six seconds further back, so a bronze medal at best it looks like so far.
Lap 46 – Much like an accordion, but slightly more interesting is the gap between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. It goes out and in between 1.0 and 1.5 seconds.
Lap 51 – That McLaren gap is hanging around the 1.5 second mark at the moment. Fernando Alonso, who was grumpy about his tyres not long ago is making his moves against the lower midfield. Hopefully he can get to the points by race end or try his best. He’s up to 15th.
Lap 53 – Kimi Antonelli pits for new tyres, and spooked by this Ferrari pit Leclerc for new tyres. Charles Leclerc gets out just in front of the Mercedes of Antonelli but the youngster has a good run at the Ferrari and he attempts to get past Leclerc into the banked turn three, but gets it wrong, understeers and clips the Ferrari and puts Leclerc into the wall, which destroys the front of the car and right front tyre and suspension. Leclerc is out, Antonelli pits for damage, but will get a penalty for sure. Worse for Leclerc, he says that his pit stop was unnecessary according to Sky F1’s Bernie Collins, who is actually good.
SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
Both McLarens pit for new tyres with a double stack again. Bot have slow stops but it doesn’t matters as Max Verstappen pits again. Most pit really. McLaren are on hard tyres, 3rd to 7th are on softs, with the midfield behind that a mixture of soft, medium and hard.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS ALB ANT GAS ALO BOR
Winners are Gasly who hadn’t pit until then and Alonso and Bortoleto who got an easier ride into the points. Alex Albon too is benefitting from others pain, usually and again today, his team mate’s bad luck.
SAFETY CAR EXITS
Lap 57 – Oscar Piastri restarts but not as good as the last time but hangs onto his lead. Max Verstappen on the softer tyre has a small window to really annoy Lando Norris but doesn’t quite manage it. A few moves in the midfield keeps the commentator excited while Piastri gets the lead over a second and out of DRS.
ORDER – PIA NOR VER HAD RUS ALB ANT GAS ALO BEA
Lap 58 – Kimi Antonelli adding a pit lane speeding penalty to his accident penalty. Further back Yuki Tsunoda passes Bortoleto who has fallen out of the points quickly since the restart.
Lap 60 – The gap between the McLarens is swinging between inside and outside of DRS. Could there be a championship defining battle to come in the last part of the race?
Lap 64 – The gap is maintaining at over 1.5 second and Piastri is doing a great job in front. As he had all race.
Lap 65 – Lando Norris says he smells smoke. Not long after that we can see the smoke. Not long that the McLaren is slowing and failing. Lando Norris is Out!!!! Devastation for the British driver and the British TV Commentary who sounds like their dog and cats have been run over. They say Piastri won’t want to see his team mate’s car on the side of the track. We disagree, I’m sure he is very, very happy with the +25 Championship lead extension.
SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
This leaves Isack Hadjar in third, Oliver Bearman is career best finish too. Not a bad race for rookies.
ORDER – PIA VER HAD RUS ALB ANT BEA STR ALO GAS
Light drizzle is falling……
SAFETY CAR EXITS
Lap 69 – Oscar Piastri restarts for a third time and does just enough to stay in front of Max Verstappen who is pushing hard. No other movement of position behind, although Antonelli has 15 seconds worth of penalties to serve post-race.
Lap 71 – Piastri has a 1.5 second lead to Max Verstappen with two laps to go. It should be enough for a win and a 25 point extension of his Championship lead.
FINAL LAP – Oscar Piastri cruises around the final lap and wins after leading every lap of the race. Max Verstappen finishes second which isn’t nearly as exciting as Isack Hadjar’s first podium after a mega drive. Other great stories like Oliver Bearman’s best career finish in sixth, great recovery for Alex Albon, and points for Yuki Tsunoda. Lance Stroll also got points, which like his F1 career isn’t really deserved.
FINAL ORDER (Across the line) – PIA VER HAD RUS ALB BEA STR ALO TSU OCO
Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).
These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. 5 points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.
THE GREAT-EST – OSCAR PIASTRI
Despite being overshadowed by his team mate in most sessions over the weekend, Piastri still manages to take pole position and lead the race from the start and lead every lap. Handed a Championship defining bonus when his team mate’s engine failed late in the race. We’re sure he will celebrate with a few laughs.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
ISACK HADJAR – Qualified a magnificent fourth in the Racing Bull, a feat in a rookie year would get more attention except that Hadjar has impressed enough for it to feel like it is normal. But to hold on in the race, keep George Russell and Charles Leclerc at bay was outstanding. Rewarded in full with a first podium when Lando Norris retired. Why would he want a Red Bull?
MAX VERSTAPPEN – Damage limitation weekend, and/or best of the rest. Good start saw him running second in the early laps, until the McLaren of Lando Norris got going. Maintained third for a long time, got a bump into second late.
ALEX ALBON – Not a great qualifying, but as he tends to do, shuffled further and further forward during the race and leaves with a big bag of points.
OLIVER BEARMAN – Best F1 result so far in 6th.
THE GRAPE-EST – LEWIS HAMILTON
Wasn’t looking like too bad a weekend despite being outqualified by his team mate again, and stuck behind him on track. But then he binned it into the wall at turn three, a bad result for someone already losing confidence in his career form at Ferrari.
DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS
LANDO NORRIS – So fast all weekend, and only just pipped for pole position. Also pipped for second at the start but dealt with that decisively out on track and showed good pace thereafter. But cruelly denied at least second with a late race failure. Loses 25 points to his team mate in a Championship where he may not be able to afford to do so.
CARLOS SAINZ – Outqualified Albon for a change and made Q3. Avoided bad luck for a change. Ran in the top ten for most of the race until the Safety Car when he then clashed with Liam Lawson, which he claimed was Lawson’s fault. A slow lap to pit, losing his points, then he is penalised ten seconds for the Lawson incident.
LIAM LAWSON – A very solid weekend including top ten qualifying and running in the points ruined by clashing with Carlos Sainz. Ran last after post-clash pitstops.
KIMI ANTONELLI – A weekend of improved results looekd on the cards, despite missing out on Q3 again. But a poor piece of judgement against Charles Leclerc led to the exit of the Ferrari and a penalty to himself. Another one for pit lane speeding ruined his point scoring finish.
LANCE STROLL –Went off in practice. Went off in qualifying without setting a lap. Started dead last. Walked out on media questioning post qualifying. Not that anyone really cares, as he talks nothing but dross anyway. But why does he persist with F1? And why do fans have to persist with him. Actually did well in the race to run ninth after the safety car and finish seventh, but he is so unlikeable he can stay as the Grape.
CHALRES LECLERC – An underwhelming race ending in the same barrier as his team mate. At least it was not his fault, but same end result.
Was it a good race, loads of action, a tense ending, a surprise result or DNF, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest?
We rate the big race itself, so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.
PRE RACE ACTION (FP, QUAL, SPRINT, OFF TRACK etc) – 3 / 5
Qualifying might have been a McLaren show but at least it was tense and tight. Perfect for a Championship fight.
ON TRACK ACTION (RACE) – 6 / 10
An exciting start that lasted for about half a lap. The Safety Car spiced things up for a bit with a few nice passes and a few ordinary ones. Another Ferrari accident brought out another Safety Car and a little more action. It left a tense final laps battle between the Championship leading McLarens.
ANY SURPRISES? – 5 / 5
McLaren 1-2 wasn’t much of a surprise. Lewis Hamilton binning a car into a wall would have been a surprise two years ago. Izack Hadjar’s form was an eyebrow raiser. But a Lando Norris Mercedes engine failure certainly was.
SEASON IMPORTANCE – 5 / 5
Every race until this Championship is decided will be of high importance and a late race engine failure for Lando Norris sees him lose 25 points to Oscar Piastri. Given the fine margins between the pair, this is huge.
ENDING – 3 / 5
The final Safety Car bunched the field up again, and saw some more overtaking and a tense battle between Piastri and Norris. The Norris DNF was quite the shock. The sadness of the Sky F1 crew was highly annoying. We’re sure they wouldn’t be a even handed and sad if the other McLaren had a failure.
OVERALL RATING – 22 / 30
A great track to watch, and the racing itself wasn’t too bad. Safety Cars help. A late Championship defining moment and a first podium means the race will be remembered
