MATCH THOUGHTS

You don’t often get to play the Penrith Panthers when they are such a rabble, so you got to take advantage when it is offered, which the Dolphins did at Suncorp on Thursday night.

That’s not to say that the Dolphins didn’t play well themselves and deserved victory, but Penrith had another off night, possibly their worst of the season so far.

I didn’t feel that way when the Dolphins got off to the worst start, with Daniel Saifiti dropping the ball on the first run of the night then challenged the decision and lost. But not long after that the home side were in front with a try started in their own half through a Herbie Farnworth and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow supporting for the try.

Penrith equalised not long after and were the dominant side for a long period until the Dolphins did a mirror image of the first try with the other centre Jake Averillo splitting the line and the Hammer on the inside for the try.

Paul Alamoti was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle and Jake Averillo helped himself to a try of his own during that period, a just reward for an excellent game, he was one of the Dolphins best.

With Connelly Lemuelu crashing over just after half time the Dolphins and their fans could start to dream with a 24-6 lead.

The rest of the half felt like Penrith had more than enough ball and territory to get back into the game, but were unable to do so through a combination of some poor attack, mistakes and some excellent Dolphins defending. Penrith did score one more try, but it was quite the piece of luck, and worth a view if you are able. Jack Bostock has shadowing a kick over the dead ball line when he kicked it to help it over the line. Sadly for the Dolphins winger the kick went backwards and not over the line, to a waiting Moses Leota, who was a solid five metres in front of Nathan Cleary’s original kick, but unsure if that matters.

That Penrith try didn’t matter in the end, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow grabbed himself a third try in broken play with thirty seconds to go as only he can. Allowing players and fans to celebrate a great win.

It is certainly two bonus competition points, as when the Dolphins were 0-4 and staring at a draw that features a lot of top teams from 2024 to come, it looked like 2025 was a write-off. But now at 2-4, and on the rise, anything is possible. And as Penrith proved tonight, 2024 means nothing.

The Dolphins are starting to come good, and some of it is due to them expanding their attack beyond a fifth tackle bomb. Their centres are class, and in great form, so it’s great they are being used as more than hit up machines. Putting Max Plath back at lock, despite moving the Dolphins captain is also a master stroke.

The 2-4 gives the Dolphins a fighting chance at finals now. You’d be struggling to say the same for Penrith at this stage. No team has won the title with a 1-5 start. But this is Penrith.
