MATCH THOUGHTS

That’s more like it from the Dolphins.

Of course a win is good, especially when you come into the game on a 0-4 record, but if the Dolphins play like that every week we’ll take the losses. just not too many.

Players who have looked below par in 2025 so far stepped up on the Gold Coast on Saturday, in particular Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow who looked his sharpest in 2025 and opened up the scoring for the Dolphins nice and early. His 190 run metres was his best effort since Round 1 and he chalked up a line break assist and a try assist. The Hammer’s try was a relief as it looked like the Dolphins were going to fail to take advantage of the extra player after Big Tino was sin binned.

Daniel Saifiti was one of the Dolphins best and he was reward with the second try of the match as he barged over from close range. A few questioned bringing in the former Knights forward, but he has been solid for the Dolphins and at minimum a decent upgrade on Jesse Bromwich on field. Three offloads for the prop against the Titans is a season high, and more of that is needed.

Key to the Dolphins attack was halfback Isaiya Katoa doing a lot more running with the ball, not just saving himself for the last tackle bomb which was becoming predictable and counter productive. His 23 runs was almost double the average leading into this Round 5 clash. And he was second top for all run metres.

Herbie Farnworth was immense again, as he has been all season, and was around the top of a lot of key stats for the game. He has without a doubt been the best buy for the Dolphins after their first season.

With Tom Gilbert to return next week, that will push out one of the back three forwards, which will be a shame as they all played well. But any side is better with Tom Gilbert, so competition will be good for the Dolphins.

The Gold Coast may not have got the win of played at their best v the Dolphins, but their style of play is enjoyable and we get the feeling they will win more than they lose this season. Which usually means finals.

Talking of finals, historic stats are against the Dolphins with only two teams of 13 since 2013 overturning a 0-4 start to the season to make the finals, but playing like they did against the Titans will mean fans enjoy the season more than looked likely after the first moth of games.
