A ‘feud’ is raging between two of the world’s biggest pop stars.
Amber Leach and Constance Parkinson are lighting up Spotify and social media with their number one albums and numerous singles going viral.
And they’re completely different: Amber is a bubbly blonde who sings upbeat pop songs about relationships, makes fun of herself, and had a Netflix Christmas special. Constance is more serious – singing about outcasts, people trying to find their way in the world, and political issues. While Amber’s social media is full of videos of her dancing and lip-syncing to her own songs, Constance speaks about politics in her videos and isn’t afraid to call out journalists who don’t take her seriously enough. And according to the media, they can’t stand each other, with various media outlets reporting the pair snubbing each other at awards shows.
Professor Shaun Greenslade, who teaches The Iconography of Pop Culture at Greg Norman University, says it’s the difference between them that makes their feud so fascinating.
“Amber is the perky pin up girl that teenage girls want to be and that teenage boys fantasise about. Her music is the type of upbeat, inoffensive stuff that you can put on at a party and nobody will complain. Constance takes herself more seriously, which appeals to the more mature listener, and her songs explore deeper themes. Like people having a favourite member of the Beatles, everyone can identify with either Amber or Constance depending on their tastes.”
Though there’s one problem. The feud doesn’t exists.
“I don’t know where this ‘feud’ nonsense comes from,” said Amber. “I’ve seen Constance at awards shows and other stuff. We may say hello to each other in passing, but that’s about it. She’s a lot braver than me with the media and it’s clear she writes her own songs. She sings about issues that matter and she has a nice voice. Good for her.”
“I’ve got nothing against Amber,” said Constance. “She seems like a sweet, innocent girl and looks like she’s having fun. Why would I ‘feud’ with her? Her music is worlds away from mine and she’s doing very well for herself. I watched her Netflix thing – it was funny and I liked that she can make fun of herself. I wish I could do that, but there’s too many serious issues to talk about.”
Amber and Constance’s management teams have tried to get the pair together for a special debut song, but the artists’ busy schedules has made that impossible.
“I’m sure we’ll sing together one day, maybe even do an album together? That would be fun,” said Amber.
“I think our styles would work well together. Maybe one day when we aren’t as busy. Who knows?” said Constance.
