MATCH THOUGHTS

It was a much better performance for the Dolphins against the Tigers than the previous two servings for 2025, but they dropped off just enough in the second half to allow the Tigers to steam roll them late leaving them 0-3.

And they can ignore, or downplay the Wayne Bennett effect all they like, the fact is the Dolphins have three losses from three games, despite a stronger side on paper than 2024, and they have really only played one good half of rugby league.

There are positives. One being the halves. Both were much better this game, with a lot more skill and zip on display then there has been so far in 2025. In particular, Isaiya Katoa finding his running game is a real boost. It led to a few good point scoring opportunities, with the opposition perhaps as surprised as us that Katoa didn’t simply put up a bomb kick, as he appears to do every time, often to our scorn.

The returns of Jack Bostock and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki were welcome. Bostock scoring in his first game and bringing some real enthusiasm. Finefeuiaki caused some problems on his side of the field, and looks to be adding to real quality out wide.

Herbie Farnworth was magnificent again and in the sharp end of a lot of player stats from the game. He was first overall for Tackle Breaks, second for both all Run Metres and Post Contact Metres and Assists.

Despite our bias, Ray Stone was an onfield lumberjack, felling opposition players at will. Fact: the Dolphins were ahead when Ray Stone was on the field, and the Tigers scored their three second half tries when Stone left the field. If Dolphins are going to get harder to win these kinds of games, they’ll need more stone.

Take nothing away from the Wests Tigers, who looked scratchy at first, and with better last tackle options could have ran away with the game more. The Benji-Luai Revolution continues, and all it took was patience, a new coach, and a few ex-Penrith players.
