An older Australian has gone on an epic anti-Halloween rant.
Gavin spent Saturday morning writing a long Facebook post about how Halloween should be banned in Australia. Highlights included “revoking the citizenship of any Aussie who participates in Halloween” and “parents who indulge this evil ‘holiday’ are turning their kids into bloody Yankees!”
Not surprisingly, the reaction to the post was mostly negative, with commentors telling Gavin that Halloween isn’t an American holiday, Halloween parties are fun for adults too, and there’s nothing wrong with letting kids go trick or treating as long as it’s safe and supervised.
“I told him not to post that,” said Gavin’s wife Linda. “The old duck goes on this same bloody tirade every October. But everyone stopped listening to him years ago! The grandkids love Halloween, and I’m happy to join in. We get some exercise, free lollies, and watch a kid-friendly scary movie afterwards. It’s harmless fun.”
While he was initially happy to argue in the comments section, Gavin eventually got tired of it and deleted the post, muttering about “the Americanisation of Australia”, before watching a documentary about the 10 greatest American Presidents.
