Inspired by the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but aren’t an athlete or in one of the many lockdowns or restricted movements around Australia and the world? Then we are suggesting that you can channel the Olympic spirit locally or online with our Ordinary Everyday Olympics 2021 Alternative.
If you are only an ordinary Joe or Joelene and can’t be one of the world’s very best world’s athletes why not instead bring the sport back down to your level with the Ordinary Everyday Olympics.
This can include anyone and everyone in a range of challenges that can happen at anytime or anywhere. Well, except Tokyo that is.
Much like the Olympics we have assembled a bunch of individual events that wouldn’t stand up by themselves and get very little interest unless it is part of a collective. But unlike the Olympics half of our content won’t be coming from the swimming arena.
Also unlike the Olympics athletic prowess is not a factor, which means anyone and everyone can join in the Ordinary Everyday Alternative Olympics 2021.
Feel free to upload your efforts to our Facebook page here with the hashtag #EverydayOlympics
Ordinary Everyday Alternative Olympics 2021 Events
THE EXACT $.00 PETROL BOWSER CHALLENGE
Filling up a car can be a tedious and expensive exercise, so why not create an ordinary everyday Olympic event out of this.
With only the promise of a cheap frozen drink once inside the shop the only carrot to dangle.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
Each person must fill to at least $50, which won’t take long with today’s fuel pricing.
The challenge is to stop every $10 on exactly $10.00, $20.00, $30.00 etc.
Every fill must be in the spirit of the Ordinary Everyday Olympics. So one must squeeze the petrol dispensing gun to maximum pressure, and have only one chance to stop at each $10 interval.
The winner is the person who can fill to exactly $50.00 by stopping at all of the $10 intervals preceding it.
THE 22.2KM DRIVING CHALLENGE
Some people say they have a knack for looking down at their speedo and seeing the odometer with all the same numbers. Like 22.2km.
Like Triple Jump at the Olympics, it is an extremely useless endeavour unless it is part of a wider group of sporting events like our Everyday Olympics.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
The challenge here is after the previous petrol filling challenge you are to drive your car with the trip meter covered and stop the car once you think you’ve reached 22.2km.
Goal medal is awarded to the person who is able to do it exactly. In the event of a tie, there is a playoff where compeditors need to get to 33.3km.
But since a lot of people in lockdown can’t drive too far, how about some more localised ones.
THE FIND THE SLEEP FUNCTION ON THE REMOTE IN THE DARK CHALLENGE
Catching a little night time TV before going to sleep is one of the world’s simple, but you don’t want it to go on all night as too much Spongebob Squarepants or early morning infomercials can start to affect the brain and sleep.
But the sleep function is often so hard to find with different locations and different descriptions for the function.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
Each person has to put on a 60 Sleep Timer in complete darkness with the remote hidden somewhere in the bed to replicate the late night requirement.
Fastest time wins the gold medal.
EXTRA CHALLENGE
Go to someone else’s house – preferably someone you know and without B & E – and perform the same on a different remote.
THE GUESS THE YEAR OF THE COIN CHALLENGE
Having actual cash is becoming a thing of the past, which has been sped up by Coronavirus, so why not find an avenue of enjoyment of something that may not be around forever.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
Players must assemble 10 coins of various value with the head side facing down. The everyday athlete must then try and guess the year on each coin, with a point added for every year over/under the correct year on the coin.
The winner is the person with the fewest points, or indeed a rare zero points after 10 coins.
THE WIKIPEDIA CHALLENGE
Most of the Ordinary Everyday Olympics 2021 so far have required a little bit of effort, so being everyday and ordinary we thought it was about time for something a little bit easier. Or at minimum one that doesn’t require standing.
And Wikipedia offers so much and asks for so little. It can end up in an unlimited wander through the internet.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
The official Everyday Olympian will be given two subjects, and the winner is the person who gets there through Wikipedia by clicking through the fewest pages.
In the event of a tie, speed counts. Not that speed, time.
THE VACUUM CORD RETRACTION CHALLENGE
Vacuuming is one of those regular everyday things we do, and what better subject to base an Everyday Olympics event around.
But not racing around a loungeroom like an Olympian, or cleaning to a certain standard, something much more tedious and average than that.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
This challenge is simple really yet so impossible. Everyday athletes just have to press the vacuum cleaner cord retraction button and hope the cord makes it all the way in one go. No lifting of the foot, no touching of the cord.
If the cord doesn’t make it all the way, then the distance that did is your measure.
Each everyday Olympian gets three attempts, and an average of the three runs is taken.
THE IKEA FLAT PACK CHALLENGE
Some people are really good at building an Ikea flat pack, and don’t they deserve a medal.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
Given Covid has caused the Olympics to be postponed once, and another by product of Covid is a lot more people working from home, the challenge is to assemble a home office the quickest.
But beware, a qualified Workplace Health and Safety Officer will inspect the completed product, and your time doesn’t stand until getting the green light from a WHSO.
THE MOWING PATTERNS FREE FORM CHALLENGE
Time to get creative, but still within the everyday task boundaries of the everyday Olympics.
For those lucky enough to be in summer, the grass grows very quickly and so needs lots of mowing.
Why not make it into an event.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
Everyday Olympians are to select a three minute piece of music then mow their lawn into any pattern of their choosing.
Scores out of seven will be determined by a panel of ten Jim’s Mowing employees, and will factor in final output and the grace of the routine and choice of appropriate music for the challenge.
THE TRAIN SURFING CHALLENGE
OK, so not that kind of train surfing before you get all outraged.
This is the family friendly version of simply standing in a train carriage without holding onto anyone or anything.
Sounds easy, well we’ll see.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
All that is involved in this every day challenge is travelling for as far as you can on a train without holding onto anything for balance or touching anyone else on the train because it either good manners not to or illegal if you do.
To qualify one run must be in peak hour, one run must be in the afternoon school run or Friday night last train home. If you can be bothered, the final run is any time of your choosing.
Your score is the average time over the three runs.
THE GUTTER CLEARING CHALLENGE
There’s nothing more boring yet important than clearing out your gutters.
Perfect for the everyday Olympics.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
Given that all houses and leaf matter is different, we’ll have to do a bit of math here to sort out the winner.
The ultimate score will be a mixture of speed, distance covered, and weight of the amount of crap cleared from the gutters.
Each compeditor is given 10 minutes.
So the weighting will be as follows.
30% distance covered overall.
30% metres per second covered in five minutes.
30% total weight of crap cleared from gutter.
10% distance covered / total shift of ladder.
-5% per incident of damage
THE STONE’S GREEN GINGER WINE CHALLENGE
Stone’s was voted as one of the world’s worst alcoholic beverages after a recent survey of our in house writers, so what finer drink to have an everyday Olympics event as a feature.
As with any great sporting endeavour, sometimes it’s more about the punishment the athletes endure than the joy of it.
THE EVERYDAY OLYMPIC CHALLENGE
Drink the bottle in any time frame within 24 hours and not throw up.
Artistic points given for the best mixer, drinking vessel, costume worn, and interpretive dance upon completion of the bottle.
Jury for artistic point will be made up of members of various social fishing clubs.
TOKYO OLYMPICS ARMCHAIR EXPERT
Can’t be bothered doing anything but still want to be part of the everyday Olympics while watching it on TV. How about the following….
- Guessing the exact distance of the long jump before the score comes up.
- High Jump / Pole Vault – hit the bar or not.
- Guess how long the last five minutes of the Men’s basketball actually takes.
- Have one of a number of GurglerBet Olympics betting specials.
