Here are the 2019 German Grand Prix results, along with our race rating, the internet’s shortest review, plus we hand out the points for the best and worst of the race and all the stuff in between.
Another great race was delivered, with F1 (with the help of the rain) giving critics another two fingers for those critical of F1 after the French GP.
It was hard to keep up with so much action, but another race was pinched by Max Verstappen and Red Bull. With various drivers having their worst weekends in quite a while, and some redemption for those struggling this season.

2019 GERMAN GRAND PRIX IN 50 WORDS OR LESS
It rained, and then it didn’t, and then it rained and it didn’t. In between various cars including Lewis Hamilton gave away big opportunities, and Max Verstappen came through all the chaos, and had the right strategy at the right time to win. A late charge for Vettel gave him an unlikely home podium.
2019 GERMAN GRAND PRIX TALKING POINTS
JUST ADD WATER – Nothing beats a wet/dry GP.
DRAG STRIP RUN OFF WAS JUST FINE – for all the talk of it being to slippery, how about a refreshing change where drivers are punished to the maximum for going off the main track? As long as drivers aren’t hurt, there should be more.
IF RICCIARDO DIDN’T REGRET RENAULT MOVE, HE SHOULD DO NOW – Not only seeing Max win yet another GP, but to have another failure in the rain.
WILLIAMS BLEW A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY – Look at Lance Stroll’s big points haul, that should have been Williams too. Stroll was toards the back, but a bold strategy left him in the podium positions late before being caught and passed by Vettel. But given how bad the Williams situation has been, they should have taken similar risks, as they are not going to get that close again in the dry.
2019 BRITISH GRAND PRIX RESULTS – RACE RATING
Was it a good race? Well here’s our sort-of scientific rating out of 50.
SURPRISE – 10/10
A Red Bull win in Germany, Lewis Hamilton looking average, Vettel’s second place from the back of the grid, key crashes at the front. You would be greedy to want more.
SUSPENSE – 10/10
There was suspense with the weather and on track throughout. Strategies playing out. Late charges. Penalties.
RACING – 9/10
Nothing evens out the cars and abilities like wet, and they all had a red hot go.
SIGNIFICANT EVENT – 9/10
Hamilton spins more than once, Bottas and Leclerc crash out.
SEASON DEFINING – 8/10
A chink in the Mercedes armour? Red Bull overtaken Ferrari? The Championship may not be blown wide open yet, but one more race like this it could be.
TOTAL RACE RATING 46/50
Something is wrong with F1, three great races in a row.
2019 GERMAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – GREAT or GRAPE
Who was king of the road,? Who was the villain? Who stunk up the place? Who outperformed expectations? Or was just plain unlucky? We split up the best of the best and worst of the worst with Great and Grape of the 2019 German Grand Prix results.
THE GREAT
MAX VERSTAPPEN (Best of the Best)
Qual 2nd – Race 1st
Why so great? – Wins another Grand Prix, showcasing all the skills, and race management, and throws in the fastest lap too. He gives himself an outside chance for the Championship too.
SEBASTIAN VETTEL
Qual 20th – Race 2nd
Why so great? – Had a solid afternoon in the chaos, but ramped it up at the end when he went on a charge that took him all the way to 2nd, the podium making up for an awful qualifying, and recent bad races.
DANI KVYAT
Qual 14th – Race 3rd
Why so great? – Collected a rare podium for himself and Toro Rosso with a fine drive to third. Held it together where previously wouldn’t and many other more highly rated drivers didn’t.
LANCE STROLL
Qual 15th – Race 4th
Why so great? – A bold strategy in the final part of the race saw the Racing Point driver in the top three when the Safety Car disappeared. Was a great result for him after a lacklustre season so far, and for the team after Perez crashed out.
CARLOS SAINZ
Qual 7th – Race 5th
Why so great? – 5th place is still a great result for Sainz, but was it a missed opportunity for a rare podium?
ALEXANDER ALBON
Qual 16th – Race 6th
Why so great? – Rounded off a great day for Toro Rosso with a fighting drive to 6th. Looked more than capable throughout.
ROMAIN GROSJEAN / KEVIN MAGNUSSEN
Qual 6th – 8th
Qual 12th – Race 11th
Why so great? – Duel points scoring is great for Haas, and for the drivers too. Didn’t stop them running into each other, nor will it stop one of them probably getting the boot.
ROBERT KUBICA
Qual 18th – Race 140th
Why so great? – First points for Williams and himself since his comeback. A rare day ahead of George Russell in the end. For our betting sake, after taking George Russell at 100-1 for a points finish, we can’t help but feel annoyed that Russell was not the driver to get points. But we can’t begrudge the points for Kubica and Williams.
THE GRAPE
LEWIS HAMILTON (Grapest Race)
Qual 1st – Race 9th
Why so bad? – His worst race in as far back as the mind goes. Although he was under the weather, we’re sure he didn’t mean to have so many key moments. Spinning and cutting the pit lane entrance and being penalised 5 seconds wasn’t great, and his spin towards the end was out of character. All after a bungled pitstop where Mercedes looked like they had no idea. At least it shows he’s human.
VALTTERI BOTTAS
Qual 3rd – Race DNF
Why so bad? – Had the perfect opportunity to gain some ground on Lewis Hamilton in the Championship, but threw it away on lap 56. He was ahead of Vettel at the time.
CHARLES LECLERC
Qual 10th – Race DNF
Why so grape? – Potentially on track for a first win, but ran wide onto the drag strip and crashed out of the race.
NICO HULKENBERG
Qual 9th – Race DNF
Why so grape? – Potentially on track for a drought breaking first career podium or even more, but was caught out by the conditions. Was fourth when he went off, behind the two Mercedes.
DANIEL RICCIARDO
Qual 13th – Race DNF
Why so grape? – An engine failure in the wet shows the kind if grape luck the Aussie has this season. You do make your own luck with your team selections.
SERGIO PEREZ
Qual 8th – Race DNF
Why so grape? – It was the kind f race that the Mexican often excels in. Not this time, as he was the first out.
PIERRE GASLY
Qual 4th – Race 14th
Why so grape? – A better qualifying was wasted with a mediocre race, and a very ordinary end to the race where clashed with Albon. Given the swiftness of some Red Bull driver decisions, it seems not out of the question that Hungary could be his last race.

2019 SEASON GREAT AND GRAPE – DRIVER POINTS
There’s no point in compiling of all the F1 data we can find, without working out a grand total. So here it is.1 point for featuring in Great, -1 for featuring in the Grape. A bonus point for the very best and worst.1 point for out-qualifying team mate.
1 point for Finishing ahead of team mate, although this is subjective if need be. Especially in the case of a DNF. Or incompetence on bothdriver’s behalf.
3 points for a Race win, 2 for Podium, 1 for Fastest Lap.
1 point for most overtakes on the first lap. 0.5 if it is shared, no matter how many drivers share it.
2 points for Pole Position, 1 for a Front Row start.
1 point for Best of the Rest in Qualifying and Race.
-1 point for an avoidable accident or silly incident.
