$160 million is an awful lot of money, that is the reported amount that the same sex plebiscite will cost.
That is on top if the potential more in lost productivity and other costs that numbers gurus PWC said may cost.
Without getting Into the political argument too much, it is pretty clear that $160 million is a lot of money to ask a simple question.
That is what some of Canberra’s “finest” are arguing about right now.
If the political system can’t change the same sex plebiscite from going ahead on February 11 then it’s time to embrace it.
Since the bloody thing is going to cost us $160m and beyond, why not use the opportunity to answer a few more of the burning questions.
As we are spending so much facilitating just the one question, surely there’s loads more questions that need to be answered by the Austrlaian public. Questions that have gone unanswered for too long.
There’s only one solution. Let’s turn into Feb 11 into a festival of plebiscite – PlebFest 2017.
So what The Gurgler is suggesting is to get in touch with your local MP, via Email, Tex, Facebook, Twitter, Fax, Gorilla Gram, and whining on ABC Local radio. If using social media try the hashtags #PlebFest or #IWantValueForMy160M #StrunkIsKing. Let them know that for $160M one question isn’t good enough.
Time to get something else changed in Australia whilst we’re splashing the cash.
They’ve even giving $7.5M of tax payers money to assist the No vote in getting their point across.
We say we’ll take just a mere few hundred thousand each to campaign on our chosen subjects and viewpoints.
Our major questions we want answered in #PlebFest2017 are listed below. A definitive Yes or No that needs to be determined once and for all, by the people.
Or why not add your question in to our comment section, or to your local MP.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS IN QUEENSLAND
Since we’re already going to the polls, why not slip in the burning question on most of South East Qld’s lips come Summer time. Think of the extra hour of sunlight*, the fact we wouldn’t get delayed TV over summer, and that the crows will wake you at 5:30am not 4:30am.
Although it does mean we get Foxtel shows an hour early.
* Is not an extra hour of sunlight, merely an hour of sun an hour later than usual. Cows, Sofas and Curtains can rest easy. Those wishing to not have daylight savings should use the #SaveTheSofas tag.
NRL GRAND FINALS BACK AT 3pm ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Good enough for the AFL to stick to it’s guns, so good enough for NRL. Time to let the people decide rather than Sydney based TV executives determined to ruin our tradition for another wanker Jeep ad, Cold Chisel, and fireworks. Bring back the Sunday afternoon NRL Final.
Campaign and vote yes on Same Sex Plebiscite day.
METRIC SYSTEM / IMPERIAL SYSTEM
There has been much whinging about the Metric system since it’s inception in the 1960’s. So a Yes or No vote to keep it or not will stop those who think Metric is the work of the devil if a definitive Yes to Keep will mean the people want it to stay. And it will, by 40 rods to a hogshead.
MELBOURNE CUP HOLIDAY
Talking about lost productivity, and we weren’t, is there a day of work where less gets achieved?
Another question that could be asked at PlebFest2017 is whether the entire country should have the day off. It’s not as if after the buying sweeps, orgainising sweeps, organising lunches, going down to the TAB to line up for 45mins, after spending 30 minutes chatting to the guy who thinks he knows horses and boats but really only knows boats, eating lunch, getting in early to watch the race, watching the race, analysing the race, discussing the race, collecting the sweep money or complaining about it as the person organising has scarpered with the loot, and complaining to HR after inappropriate behaviour from the three guys who brought in a six pack of MF Lager, that anyone is really working anyway.
This is also to be an additional public holiday, not taken from another date.
Time to vote Yes on Melbourne Cup Holiday for all. We’ll take a $200K hand out from the government, put it on the next favourite at Swan Hill or Quirindi to double our cash and chances of PlebFest2017 success.
A BETTER SPLIT OF SUNDAY AFTERNOON FOOTBALL
If you have visited our website before you’ll know this is one of our bigger beefs. What better way to get a fairer share of the Sunday afternoon football than to get an official government tick of ensuring all teams get a minimum of two home games at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon.
If not, we’ll continue to ignore the All Sydney Sunday Club.
REMOVING MICHAEL SLATER and/or RAY HADLEY FROM COMMENTARY BOX
Whilst we’re onto Channel Nein how about some government involvement in another couple of sporting beefs. With Ray Warren retiring and no Jim Maxwell on ABC radio this year in addition to the retirement of Kerry O’Keeffe sports commentary stocks are at their lowest. A summer full of Michael Slater and a winter of Ray Hadley.
Let the question be asked of the Australian people and the answer of no Slater or Hadley be delivered.
THE USE OF THE WORD “GATE” TO DESCRIBE CONTROVERSY
The Watergate scandal was called that because it was the Watergate hotel in which the questionable activities took place. It was not about water.
So the use of gate after another to describe a controversy is wrong and highly annoying. Almost as bad as the cheapening of the standing ovation.
The recent use of “Egg-gate” to discuss the egg throwing incident by the Cowboys players.
We propose the question that the use of Gate will be made illegal. Vote yes on Feb 11.
REINSTATE DOBOY STATION
With no word on the inclusion of Doboy station on the Brisbane Monopoly board, we’ll have to use February 11 to finally get some support for Doboy station.
It deserves to be reinstated, despite having no purpose and having to be rebuilt, but you never know when and where the next property boom will be in East Brisbane.
So we’ll take our few hundred grand to start the campaign and get the nation on board, if the Brisbane Monopoly snobs aren’t interested.
That’s our thoughts, why not add some of your own. Or speak to your local MP and get the best value possible on February 11.
