Gurgler’s Sporting Winners & Losers

We’re always talking and bitching about sport at The Gurgler, so why not have a weekly whine, with our weekly presentation of the sporting winners & losers for the weekend that was.

WINNERS

  • Us – A new UK Football season has seen a change of luck and a $109 multi in League One. Don’t believe us? Check it out here.
  • South Sydney – A performance that has been owed to the fans for some time. It was 86 days between wins. Ditto Broncos.
  • Redcliffe Dolphins – still top of the Queensland Cup.
  • Olympic Track and Field – finally the swimming is over and we can have the variety and quality events that the track and field section provides. More than enough Campbell sisters by now.
  • Free To Air Football fans – first time there has been live EPL on FTA. One positive out of the Optus TV deal.
  • Hull City. No side has been worse prepared for the start of an EPL season. They beat no less a side than last year’s surprise Champions.
  • Any Australian Medal Winner.
  • Hayne Cam – two new Red Button options allows an inset of Hayne with the main game or Vice Versa. Such choice.
  • Roy and HG Olympic podcast. If only these two could bring the 3 hours Sunday afternoon broadcast back. For the time being, a nice Olympic Cameo is pure gold.
  • BeIN Sport. The French Ligue One joined a triple treat of English Football League live games. With Spanish, German and Italian League to come. Plus the EPL on delay via the various club channels, sleep is for the weak.
  • Loudy Wiggins (aka Loudy Tourky) for being the most high profile follower of The Gurgler during the week.

LOSERS

  • Sharks and Cowboys in the NRL. Losing two in a row at this time of year is not a great lead into the finals.
  • Ipswich Town – Fresh from their annual early round exit of the League Cup by a lower division side, a 2-0 loss against Brentford on the weekend isn’t the end of the world. It also doesn’t fill one with a great amount of confidence that the cycle of mediocrity will be stopped.
  • Newcastle United. 2 losses from 2 games since being relegated. Early days, but not a great start.
  • Not quite losers yet – but the Australian Cricket team did well to allow Sri Lanka to get to 355 from 5 / 26. Australia’s 1/141 in reply probably highlights how good the early bowling of Australia was.
  • Wait and see on how the EPL pickup was on Optus this weekend.
