English Football League High Fives Weekly #2

Who cares about the English Football League? You do, that’s why we’re here. Or maybe you don’t and I’m talking to myself. Well at least there won’t be too many arguments. Like if Accrington Stanley is better than Luton Town. You know they are. Or I am I still talking to myself. Anyway.

We attempted to spread the good word on the upcoming Football League season to much bigger websites only to be ignored or told the A League is better. Pffft. Pre Tim Cahill that is.

Their loss as the Football League has more live games on Foxtel this year than the EPL. BeIn Sports brings multiple games a week in the new deal.

So the English Football League retains it’s home here at The Gurgler. Where it is loved and looked after. All in a convenient package for you to get updated in as little time as possible.

We have our weekly top fives from the world of the English Football League.

5 THINGS FROM LAST WEEKEND’S ACTION

  • Much talk about the big ex EPL clubs – Newcastle Utd and Aston Villa – joining the English Football League Championship. Both teams started their campaign with a 1-0 away loss. Newcastle’s loss at Fulham kicked off the season on Friday night (UK) and Aston Villa were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday.
  • Grant Ward signed for Ipswich from Spurs in the week leading up to the first game and came on at half time with the game 0-0. 45 minutes or so later he had a hat trick and Ipswich a win. Promising signs, until the League Cup…
  • QPR win was good, and the third goal from Polter that sealed was plenty good.
  • Nottingham Forest 4 Burton Albion 3 – the BeIN Sports picked the best game of the 3pm kick offs.
  • League Cup (aka EFL Cup) saw the usual exits of Championship clubs at the hands of lower league sides. X Championship teams were beaten by League Two sides.  Ipswich did their usual and were beaten by Stevenage. Aston Villa started their English Football League life with a second loss in a row against Luton. Brentford, Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday also were sent out of the comp by League Two sides. Another 5 Championship sides are out thanks to League One sides.

5 THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR THE EFL ENGLISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE THIS WEEKEND

  • Can Aston Villa win a game in the English Football League? They face Rotherham at home, a mismatch on paper and reputation. They lose this and the Villa fans will have reason to get very worried about consecutive drops.
  • Newcastle avoided a League Cup fixtures and potential embarrassment. At home to Huddersfield this weekend, which should see a first win.
  • Sheffield v Norwich – looks agoodun’ between two winners from last week and is on TV.
  • Brighton v Nottingham Forest on TV looks good too. Two teams that should be finalists come May.
  • Plymouth v Carlisle – League Two’s longest road trip. Just a mere 620 kms. Dedicated fans.
