Kick to Come – The Gurgler’s NRL Round 17 Preview

2017 nrl season review

After all the excitement of our 1000th post yesterday it is back to business with our NRL Round 17 Preview, our 1001st post. Full of tips, the smallest game by game preview possible, answers to the big questions, and almost more.

We have a full eight games to get through, and most of the origin players. Fancy that, a proper round or NRL.

THE NRL ROUND 17 PREVIEW MATCH BY MATCH IN 20 WORDS OR LESS OR SO

THURSDAY – EELS (8th) v BULLDOGS (13th)
The Eels have an exciting backline and in Clint Gutherson one of the form backs in the competition. They play possibly the most boring team in the comp. Holding pattern until next year.

FRIDAY 6pm – TITANS (14th) v DRAGONS (6th)
Two sides who got wins against the two weakest sides in the competition last weekend. Flip a coin for this week.

FRIDAY 7:50pm ish – BRONCOS (3rd) v STORM (1st)
Broncos haven’t beaten Meblourne in Brisbane since 2009, but can they if Cameron Smith doesn’t play. In related news Nate Myles will turn out for Storm feeder side Easts this weekend. Creating a record for the shortest trip from Origin to Queensland Cup.

SATURDAY 3pm – ROOSTERS (2nd) v SHARKS (5th)
A quality top half of the table clash between two Sydney sides, sounds great for that 4pm timeslot. Except the teams could possibly be too high on the ladder for Nein. Roosters get the chance to knock off both 2016 finalists in consecutive weeks.

SATURDAY 5:30pm – SEA EAGLES (4th) v WARRIORS (10th)
If the Warriors wish to resume their title as dark horses for the premiership they need to win a game in Sydney. Can Daly Cherry Evans force his way into the Origin side for No. 3? Na, Cameron Munster should be the pick.

SATURDAY 7:30pm – RAIDERS (11th) v COWBOYS (7th)
If the Raiders want to play finals they’d better start a long winning run soon. They’ve signed Ricky Stuart long term so it will be harder to sack him when he loses it. Te Maire Martin makes his Cowboys debut, less than a month after playing for Penrith. Penrith to Townsville in that short a time? Of course you couldn’t have an end of season trade period. Think of the settling in a player needs to do in 4 months.

SUNDAY 2pm – KNIGHTS (15th) v TIGERS (16th)
So bad it’s good? Nothing like a second last v last clash. A big wooden spoon up for grabs.

SUNDAY 4pm – RABBITOHS (12th) v PENRITH (9th)
An all Sydney Sunday 4pm clash, can you believe it? Hopefully Souths can build on a decent win v the Titans before their bye. We tipped Penrith for top four this year and possibly a title, which makes their 2017 season all the more disappointing.

THE BIG QUESTION FOR THE NRL ROUND 17 PREVIEW

Q. Why did the NRL bother waiting until now for unveiling the last six weeks.

A. Deep breath, and here we go.

Why on earth do we wait until now to get the last 6 rounds of the NRL, especially when it is essentially the same rubbish served up in the previous 20 rounds.

No offence to Tigers fans, but they are clearly amongst the two worst teams in the competition, so how on earth do they get 4 FTA games in the last 6 rounds. And the Bulldogs are one of the dullest teams in the comp but they get five games on FTA out of six.

And of the 3 games on FTA in the last 6 rounds, which features 36 teams, teams currently in the top 4 account for just 8. 25% of the teams involved in the FTA games are in the top 4. Obviously each game can’t be 100% Top 4, but surely that should be higher. And if not why the hell do we wait until now to unveil the draw if we are not trying to have games based on the best performed teams.

Oh, and of course the All Sydney clash on a Sunday 4pm remains with 5/6 clashes just for Sydney clubs. No matter the ladder position. The only position that is considered is the distance between Rabs’ house and the ground.

The answer to all is Channel Nein, and they can kiss our arse.
