intrust super cup round 16

All the teams are back for Intrust Super Cup Round 16 and so is our quick look at the weekend ahead.

Despite only being the three games, there was still plenty of interest from the games in Round 15, the most being the last placed Tweed Heads Seagulls defeat of the 1st placed PNG Hunters in PNG. Who’d have thunk it.

There’s plenty of good match ups this weekend, and we have a taste of all of it from Intrust Super Cup Round 16 below.

Intrust Super Cup Round 16 Match Previews in 25 Words or So

Burleigh Bears v Ipswich Jets at Pizzey Park on Sunday – 1.40pm
Ipswich don’t have Ben Hunt this time, and should win the battle of the two most recent premiers.

Souths Logan Magpies v Redcliffe Dolphins at Davies Park on Sunday – 2pm
Game of the round 3rd v 4th, and two sides the Broncos rely heavily upon for reinforcements.

Tweed Heads Seagulls v Townsville Blackhawks at Piggabeen Sports Complex on Sunday – 2pm

WOW. Very few would have seen last weekend’s shock loss to the last placed Tweed Heads Seagulls coming, and the fortress that used to be National Football Stadium doesn’t seem quite as daunting. A shame too because the Hunters have a good run of home game to finish the season. Whilst it is only a couple of losses so far in 2017, they were also lucky to get away with a win over Souths Logan as well.

At least the away record has improved, and it will want to against the Northern Pride, as the Hunters are yet to beat the Pride in Cairns. Losses in 2014 and 2016 combined with no game in Cairns in 2015 means the Hunters haven’t won in Cairns during the season since their arrival in 2014.

But they have enough quality across the pack, surely more than the struggling Northern Pride, but that could have been said for last weekend.

One to watch for PNG fans isn’t necessarily from the Hunters but the Pride winger Gideon Gela-Mosby. He is a possibility for the Kumuls at the end of the season’s World Cup, and what platform to impress than against the Test coach. As a Hunters and PNG fan, we hope he plays well, but not well enough to win the Pride the game.
